Wharerata
Wharerata Homestead has now evolved into Manawatu's premiere weddings and conference function centre. Wharerata is open for morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas. It is also available for dinners by arrangement.
Wharerata homestead was originally built in 1901 for Mr Arthur Edward Russell, a successful Hawkes Bay farmer. Nicknamed "Rata" by local Maori (thanks to his prolific fiery red beard), when the time came to decide on a name for his new home in the Manawatu, Arthur decided on Wharerata, or house of the red beard!
Wharerata homestead was gifted to Massey University in 1949. Wharerata was initially used as a lecture space and then in the 1970s became the on-campus social hub - as the University Staff Club.
With the subsequent cessation of the staff club, Wharerata's metamorphism into unique event centre commenced. Through the care and attention of many dedicated staff in the intervening years, Wharerata has now evolved into Manawatu's premiere function centre. Wharerata is open for morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas. It is also available for dinners by arrangement.
Wedding and Corporate Functions are provided for by arrangement. Close to the city, airport, arterial routes and accommodation, Wharerata is positioned to welcome and host any size and style of event from 50 to 500 delegates. Many aspects of dining including BBQ's are held in the beautiful gardens that surround Wharerata Homestead.
Wharerata Homestead s located in the Massey University grounds 1.7km from Harringtons Motor Lodge.
