Host Accommodation Group embraces sustainable Tourism

At their recent Conference, members of the Host Accommodation Group voted to embrace Qualmark's move to extend, improve and encourage sustainability in tourism.
Qualmark, New Zealand's official mark of quality in Tourism, recently launched its new sustainable practices criteria, referred to as Responsible Tourism. This initiative will encourage New Zealand tourism operators to improve sustainable business practices as they relate to their particular business and location.
Debbie Suisted, Chairman of the Host Accommodation Group said that a number of the groups member properties were passionate about sustainability. The introduction of Qualmark's Responsible Tourism Operations Criteria will acknowledge those operators who are already actively participating in energy efficiency, waste management, water and other conservation initiatives as well as participation in local community initiatives.
While maintaining high levels of service and a quality experience for their guests, Host Accommodation members are encouraged to share their collective knowledge of sustainable practices with each other and their guests.
Damien O'Connor, Minister of Tourism congratulated Qualmark on establishing the new environmental criteria and applauds the Host Accommodation Group for supporting the Qualmark initiative. Protecting our environment is really important if we are to ensure that the tourism industry is sustainable now and into the future. Qualmark and the Host Accommodation Group are helping to deliver on our 100% Pure New Zealand brand.
Qualmark Chief Executive Geoff Penrose welcomed the support from Host. It is great to see public endorsement from this accommodation group. Qualmark looks forward to assessing all tourism businesses on the Responsible Tourism Operations criteria from August.
The Host Accommodation Group has a network of over 70 independently owned Motels, Motor Lodges and Hotels situated throughout New Zealand and all are independently assessed by Qualmark. There are over 2,100 tourism businesses in total with Qualmark licences throughout New Zealand.
